ABOUT
Business manager Kathleen Borms: ‘BAI is a byword for art books, cultural merchandising and museum shops. These three pillars of our company both support and reinforce one other. Our museum shops allow us to keep a finger on the pulse of museum visitors’ changing needs. It helps us choose and develop our merchandising lines and our art books. By offering just the right souvenirs and books that will raise the collections’ profile, we’re able to build a bridge between the public and the museum collection.’
In our view, it’s important to enable each visitor to take a little piece of the museum home with them. A good souvenir is an extension of your visit. That’s why so many of the souvenirs we offer are based on the museum collection. Postcards with pictures of collection artefacts, as well as notebooks, mirrors, badges and spectacle lens cleaning cloths. All of our products are developed in close cooperation with the museum, thus raising the profile of an already rich collection.’
From BAI’s perspective, it’s crucial for the museum shop’s merchandising and layout to dovetail seamlessly with the DNA of the museum. ‘Each museum shop is different, just as each partner is different,’ explains Kathleen Borms. ‘For us it’s important that outsiders see the shop not as a retail concession, but rather as a part of the museum or organization which we’re working with in partnership.’
